Why Is My AC Turning Off By Itself?

A system that starts, runs a few minutes, shuts off, then starts again is short cycling. It's not just annoying — starting is the hardest thing a compressor does, so a system doing it constantly is wearing out far faster than one that runs in long, steady cycles.

What short cycling actually is

A healthy air conditioner in a Tucson summer runs in long cycles — fifteen, twenty minutes or more. Short cycling is anything much under ten minutes, repeating.

The pattern matters because it tells you the system is reaching some limit and shutting itself down to protect something, rather than satisfying the thermostat and stopping normally. Working out which limit it's hitting is the whole diagnosis.

The cheap causes, in the order worth checking

A clogged filter or a blocked return starves the system of air. Without enough air across the coil, the coil gets too cold, the safety trips, and the system stops. Replace the filter and make sure furniture or rugs aren't covering returns.

A dirty outdoor coil does the same thing from the other end. The system can't dump heat outside, pressure climbs, and the high-pressure safety shuts it down. In this climate coils load up with dust quickly, and cleaning one is one of the cheapest things that measurably helps.

A thermostat in the wrong place will also do it. If it's in direct sun, above a lamp, or on a wall with a duct running behind it, it reads a temperature the rest of the house isn't at, satisfies early, and shuts off.

The causes that need a technician

Low refrigerant causes short cycling, and as with any low charge it means a leak. A failing capacitor can cause it too — the compressor tries to start, can't, and drops out on overload. Both need someone with gauges and a meter.

An electrical fault in the contactor or control board produces the same symptom, and so does a compressor that's drawing too much current as it wears. These look identical from the hallway and completely different on a meter.

The one cause you can't repair: it's too big

An oversized air conditioner cools the air fast, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull humidity out. The house ends up cold and clammy, and the system short cycles all summer.

There's no repair for that — the fix is correct sizing next time, which is why a load calculation matters more than a rule of thumb when a system is replaced. If somebody sized your last one off square footage alone, this is the bill for it.

What to check before you call

  • Filter replaced and returns unblocked
  • Outdoor coil free of dust and debris
  • Thermostat out of direct sun and away from heat sources
  • Note how many minutes it runs — that number helps us
